Executing dcdiag for Replication Health Assessment

Command Syntax

To run dcdiag with detailed output and save results to a file:

dcdiag /v /f C:\dcdiag_results.txt
- /v enables verbose output, providing detailed replication test results.
- /f <output_file> saves the output to a specified file for later analysis.

Parameters Overview

Parameter Description
/v Displays detailed diagnostic information.
/f <file> Specifies the file path to save results.
/s <DC> Runs tests against a specific domain controller (e.g., /s DC01).
/test:Replication Runs only the replication tests.
/test:DNS Runs DNS-related tests.
/test:all Executes all available tests.

Test Selection Process

  1. Run Specific Tests:

    dcdiag /test:Replication /v /f C:\replication_results.txt

This focuses on replication health, critical for Active Directory synchronization.

  2. Run All Tests:

    dcdiag /test:all /v /f C:\full_diagnostic_results.txt

    Use this for comprehensive troubleshooting.

Interpreting Output

Key Sections in Results

  1. Test Status:
  2. Success: Replication is functioning correctly.
  3. Warning: Potential issues detected (e.g., delayed replication).
  4. Error: Critical failure requiring immediate action.

  5. Example Output Snippet:

    Test Name: Replication
    Test Result: Success
    Test Start Time: 2023-10-05 10:00:00
    Test End Time: 2023-10-05 10:01:00

A Success status indicates no replication issues.

  6. Troubleshooting Warnings:

  7. Look for Warning in tests like Replication Failure or KCC Failure.
  8. Check timestamps to identify delays in replication.

Critical Indicators

  • Errors: Resolve immediately (e.g., failed DNS records, disconnected domains).
  • Warnings: Investigate potential bottlenecks or misconfigurations.

Always review the output file for actionable insights and correlate findings with domain controller logs for deeper analysis.
